Writing

Most of what I write starts with someone else's expertise. Sometimes it arrives as a stream of consciousness, sometimes as a rough draft with a good idea buried in it. My job is to find the point and shape it into something people want to read.

How I work
One consistent voiceI look after tone of voice across everything Mantel publishes, so case studies, articles, newsletters and pitches all sound like the same organisation.Room for individual voicesNot everything should sound the same, though. When a piece is someone’s own view, I keep their opinions and way of explaining intact.Written togetherI interview, draft and refine with subject-matter experts until they recognise themselves in the result.
Who I write for

Picture who opens a case study: a board member skimming for the bottom line, an engineer checking the detail, and someone wondering what it’s like to work there. One piece has to work for all three.

Executives and decision-makers Boards, executives and heads of operations, marketing and finance, weighing up strategy, risk and return. Technical leaders and regulated industries CTOs, architects and engineers who want depth, and readers in government and regulated industries who need accuracy. Partners and vendors Joint stories that show how two organisations work together. Talent and internal teams Future hires and current staff who want to know what the company stands for, and what they’re getting involved in.
Case studies

Project teams have spent weeks, months, and sometimes years working hard to produce the best results possible. My job is to find the story in that work and tell it well.
